New Departures and Higher Education in Wartime, 1850s-1945

Higher education made great strides and expanded enrollment with the influx of women attending college.  By the 20th century, the role of American universities had been defined: doctoral courses were offered, general & specialized courses were defined, and an acceptance prerequisite was established.  Enrollment grew exponentially and colleges aimed to serve its citizens by producing work-ready graduates.
